OHIO MOVES CLOSER TO COURT REPORTING CERTIFICATION

Court reporting is making a change!  A task force of the Ohio Supreme Court has recommended establishing a certification program for the state’s reporters. The Task Force on the Certification of Court Reporters report, issued earlier this month, proposes that steno writers, voice writers, ER operators and monitors, and transcribers be covered by the program.

“The Task Force’s goal was to classify each category of individuals who are responsible for the creation and production of the record for use at the trial and appellate level,” the report states. “The Task Force concluded that all such individuals, regardless of their method of recording and regardless of whether they work in court or freelance, should be certified by the state to maintain quality assurance.”

The report recommends establishing a court reporting commission to administer the certification program. Other recommendations include mandatory continuing education and adoption of a code of ethics and professionalism.

The Supreme Court has not announced a time frame for its review of the report.
